PLANT SITE & TAILINGS FACILITY
The plant site at Kongens gruve, about 10km east of Hersjø, was contructed in 1968 and was operational from 1973 to 1977. The site is accessible along 5km of private toll road from the main arterial road. The oldest tailings, sampled in 1966, contain up to 1.44% Cu (average 0.65%). Røros Kobberverk operated for a further 10 years before all activity was closed down. The tailings from the final decade are assumed to overlay the sampled tailings and may also contain zinc that was only recovered from the high-grade Lergruvbakken mine.
